Electrochromic glass changes its transparency at the press of a button or a BMS command. Lithium ions migrate between tungsten-oxide layers, smoothly switching the glass from 65% light transmission down to 2% in 3-7 minutes. For reception zones this means solar-load control without blinds, up to 25% savings on air conditioning, and instant privacy for meeting rooms. The coating lasts over 50,000 switching cycles — more than 30 years of daily use.

How Electrochromic Glass Works
A multi-layer stack 1.2-1.8 mm thick is applied to the inner surface of an insulated glass unit. At 1-3 V, lithium ions move into the tungsten-oxide layer, which absorbs light. The process is reversible and consumes just 2-5 W/m². Units are available up to 1500 × 3000 mm and compatible with aluminium and steel curtain-wall profiles.
Zoning: each glass module is controlled individually — the lower third stays clear for views while the upper third darkens to block glare. Gradient mode is especially useful for panoramic lobby facades over 4 metres tall.
Reception-Zone Applications
A reception desk with panoramic glazing behind the host: mornings stay clear to showcase the city view; under harsh afternoon sun the glass auto-tints to a comfortable level. Visitors stop squinting and the receptionist works without screen glare.
Glass meeting-room partitions become private on command from the reception desk or on a booking-system schedule. Electrochromic partition cost starts at $850/m². Installation on an existing frame takes 1-2 days. Glass unit lead time is 4-6 weeks.
Energy Savings and Comfort
In the darkened state, electrochromic glass blocks up to 98% of solar energy and 99.5% of UV radiation. Cooling-load reduction reaches 20-25% in summer. For a 200 m² lobby with a panoramic facade, annual savings hit $1,200-1,800.
Integration with light sensors and BMS: the glass auto-reacts to sun position, cloud cover, and time of day. 'Morning reception' — full transparency; 'meeting' — 10% tint; 'presentation' — full blackout for projectors.
Materials and Desk Integration
Reception Space designs desks with electrochromic systems in mind: concealed control-cable routing, controller integrated into under-desk space, a tactile toggle on the natural marble or quartz-agglomerate countertop.
Popular combos: electrochromic facade + anthracite Fenix NTM HPL desk + 4000 K LED back-light. Or classic: glass partition with electrochromic coating + oak desk with brass hardware. Set lead time — 6-8 weeks.
