Kinetic surfaces are modular assemblies of moving elements — louvers, plates, rods — driven by servomotors. In reception areas they serve multiple purposes: regulate lighting, create dynamic patterns for a sense of presence and assist with wayfinding. For business centres and hotels, they transform a static lobby into a living space with minimal energy consumption. Kinetic installations have become a signature feature in over 300 lobbies worldwide, creating memorable first impressions that static décor cannot match.

Types of Kinetic Modules
Louver panels: vertical or horizontal blades of 1.5–3 mm anodised aluminium, 40–120 mm wide. Each louver is driven by an individual servo (0.5–2 Nm torque), rotation angle 0–180°. Standard module: 600×600 mm, 12–24 louvers, weight: 4–8 kg.
Rod panels: stainless-steel cylinders 6–12 mm diameter extending 50–200 mm. They create three-dimensional relief patterns — from waves to text messages. Surface modules: dome-shaped silicone segments that change shape via pneumatic chambers.
Application Scenarios
Reception desk façade: a louver panel 1,100 mm tall and 2,400 mm long forms a wave pattern as a visitor approaches (proximity sensor). Information wall: a 3×2 m rod panel displays the company logo, time or directional signs — without screens or pixels.
Ceiling installation: suspended 120×600 mm louvers on cables with micro-motors create a 'breathing' ceiling. Movement amplitude: ±80 mm. Speed: 5–15 mm/s — smooth and silent (under 25 dB). For hotels — synchronised with circadian lighting: louvers open in the morning, close in the evening.
For retail lobby entrances, kinetic walls create seasonal visual themes — autumn leaves, winter snowfall — that adapt automatically through calendar-based scheduling. Content updates propagate across all modules within seconds, ensuring a coordinated display across the entire installation.
Control, Installation and Pricing
Control: DMX-512 or ArtNet controller (up to 512 channels per controller). BMS integration via KNX/DALI. Sensors: proximity (IR), lux, presence. Wall panel installation for 3 m²: one working day. Ceiling installation for 10 m²: 2–3 days.
Cost of a 600×600 mm louver module: from $280. Rod module: from $420. Turnkey lobby solution (desk + accent wall + ceiling, ~15 m²): from $8,500. Power per module: 2–5 W. Lead time: 4–6 weeks.
