In open lobbies noise levels reach 65–70 dB — comparable to a busy street. An acoustic cocoon — a closed or semi-closed pod built from natural materials — reduces sound to 35–40 dB. For business centre and clinic reception areas, it combines silence, biophilic design and privacy without constructing separate rooms. The cocoon transforms any open-plan lobby into a space where guests can take calls, rest or work in comfort. Here we examine the construction, materials and costs involved.

Construction and Working Principle
The cocoon is a self-supporting shell of bent-laminated birch or ash plywood (12–18 mm thick) lined internally with acoustic felt from recycled wool (40 mm). External diameter: 1400–1800 mm, height: 2100–2400 mm. Structure mass: 120–180 kg. Inside: a chair, USB charging port and 3000 K LED spot light.
The felt lining provides a noise reduction coefficient of NRC 0.85. A 15 mm gap between shell and floor plus ventilation openings at the top prevent condensation and ensure air exchange of 12 m³/h.
Biophilic Elements
The cocoon's outer surface is enhanced with preserved moss (reindeer, flat) or vertically planted ferns in integrated planters. Moss requires no watering and retains its appearance for 5–7 years. For medical clinics, we apply antibacterial coatings to interior surfaces.
Visible natural wood grain reinforces the connection to nature. Available species: oak, ash, walnut. Finishes: oil-wax (matte), polyurethane lacquer (semi-gloss). The colour palette is limited to natural tones — from light beige to dark chocolate.
For hotel lobbies, cocoons are available with integrated wireless charging pads and USB-C ports in the armrest, allowing guests to recharge devices while resting. An optional ambient sound system plays nature sounds at 30–35 dB to enhance relaxation and reduce perceived waiting time.
Placement and Pricing
For an 80–120 m² lobby, 2–4 cocoons are recommended, positioned in the waiting zone or along the perimeter. Installation: felt feet, no floor anchoring — repositioning at any time. Delivered assembled (oversized freight) or flat-packed — on-site assembly in 2 hours.
Birch plywood cocoon with felt lining: from $1,850. Ash variant with moss: from $2,400. Furniture set (chair + table): from $450. Lead time: 4–6 weeks.
